Salamander
Salamanders were associated with fire due to a European species (aptly named the Fire salamander) that hibernates in damp, hollow logs. When the logs are taken for fuel and thrown onto fires, the little creatures will emerge from the flames, thus earning their name and causing for their association with fire. This discovery was made perhaps around the Renaissance time period and has caused for many merchants to sell armor claiming that it is made out of salamander skin. They became a symbol of alchemy and fire itself.
